Stripe generic_decline: what it means and what to do
generic_decline is the decline code Stripe returns when the customer's bank refuses a payment without giving a specific reason. It is one of the most common declines, and it can be temporary or lasting. Stripe cannot tell you which, because the issuer did not say.

What it means
The issuer refused without giving a reason. The most common decline code, and usually temporary.
The bank said no without a lasting reason. Stripe's Smart Retries recover a large share of these within a few days; a gentle reminder helps.
Why it happens
- The issuer's fraud or risk rules flagged the payment but shared no detail.
- A temporary block, spending limit or unusual-activity check on the card.
- A card or account status the issuer chooses not to disclose.
- A transient issuer-side refusal that clears on a later attempt.
What to do
- Open the payment in Stripe and check for a more specific decline code before assuming it is generic.
- Do not retry in a loop. If Stripe's automatic retries are enabled, let them run on their own schedule.
- Email the customer a neutral message with a link to update or confirm their card.
- If it fails again, suggest they contact their bank: only the issuer knows the reason.
- After repeated failures on the same card, treat it as a card that needs replacing.
Should you retry?
One or two spaced retries are often worth trying because the refusal can be temporary, but nothing guarantees success. Repeating attempts on a card that keeps refusing can lower your authorization rate, so after a few failures ask for another payment method.

Hi {name},
Your bank declined our latest payment for {product}. This is usually temporary. We will retry automatically over the next few days, but you can also update or re-confirm your card here: {link}

Is generic_decline the same as card_declined?
No. card_declined is the broad error code Stripe returns when a card is refused. generic_decline is one specific decline reason that can sit inside it, meaning the issuer gave no reason.
Can I recover a payment that failed with generic_decline?
Sometimes. It may succeed on a later attempt or after the customer updates or confirms their card, but nothing guarantees it. Check each account's history to decide how much follow-up it deserves.
